ABOUT

The band formed in late 2019 during Halloween and the three have already built up a repertoire of songs and are gigging in and around the capital.  "It all happened very quickly and by sheer coincidence," says Brett. "Toby and I worked together as bartenders at Stane Street Syndicate (a bar in Clapham) and talked about forming a band. It wasn't long afterwards that I noticed Lucy in the pub one afternoon and approached her. I literally introduced myself, asked if she played bass and would like to join the band. And that, as they say, was that!"

Their style, which is rooted in rock music of the 1960s and 70s, is influenced by artists/bands such as David Bowie, The Doors and Pink Floyd. Their songs are littered with images of strange landscapes, the elements and otherworldliness. Their live set includes the songs ‘Purple Moon’- which sounds like it was plucked straight out of 1960s, ‘Step Inside My Mind’- a hypnotic journey into the subconscious, 'Magic Man Remedies' - a tune underscored with melancholy and sounding not unfamiliar to many a Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins) penned song, and ‘Spider On The Wall’ –about isolation and escapism.

When asked what Secret Volcanoes sound like, Lucy responded with “expressive vocals, driving riffs, pounding percussion… with a touch of voodoo”. Tobias takes inspiration from Led Zeppelin’s drummer John Bonham and lists Beabadoobee, Inhaler and Foals as current bands on his playlist. Brett's key influences include Martin L. Gore, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.

Their first single 'Step Inside My Mind' is due to be released on Spotify this summer.

This emphasis on visual components as well as music is fundamental to Brett's oeuvre. “As a musician I've often drawn inspiration from non-musical art,” he explains. “Art and films are as likely as songs to influence and inspire me. At the same time, writing as well as performing songs always evokes a visual world for me, and I like to express that through outfits, make up, stagecraft and artwork.”

Secret Volcanoes are a London-based three piece rock band comprised of Brett Howell (singer/guitarist), Lucy Jordan (bassist) and Tobias Lever (drummer). They formed in Clapham Common in South London, and took their name from a line out of the 1954 novel ‘A Spy in the House of Love’ by writer of short stories and erotica Anaïs Nin.

“I was drawn into the story where Nin expresses her individual vision of feminine sexuality. It’s ferociously dramatic and absorbing,” explains Brett.
